A New Challenge

At the end of 2017, I took a class with Kim Maxwell to improve my writing. And, to help with the idea of public speaking. I knew before I jumped into taking a class, I would be telling my story before a live audience. A frightening idea for me – I couldn’t imagine this going well.

Writing is the core of the class, creating material to weave together a story. I found a new outlet for my creative juices. And, even found myself waking up with the first line of a story. It all felt so fresh to me! As the class evolved I wondered, “How are all these disparate stories going to come together?” But, in the end with Kim’s guidance and help, I was able to pull it out and piece it together. Kim also provided coaching and acting tips to make the story more entertaining. And, I rehearsed unheard asking my husband Keith to put on headphones. I didn’t want to spoil the surprise, but mostly I was too nervous.

Terrified

And, my terrified self, presented my story on December 1st and 2nd of 2017 to an Ojai audience. An audience filled, mostly, with strangers. And, I found myself looking into their faces, taking a deep breath. Well, here goes!

Kim Maxwell and Elaine's Classmates

Kim Maxwell and Elaine’s fellow students.

I didn’t expect them to laugh; I couldn’t imagine them enjoying themselves; the first laugh startled me so much I stepped back from the audience!. And, they continued laughing as I continued my story. My story consists of a series of events that left me wondering; am I normal? Spoiler alert: Noooooo!

New Found Confidence

My class was a confidence booster and a healing journey too! I intend to take it again at the end of 2018. If you are curious, you can hear my story, Normal on the Townies Podcast, Episode 26. Yes, it’s me talking and no, I was not allowed to wear “Authentic Metal Lace” visibly on stage. But, oh, I wanted to! It would have helped to boost my confidence level. So take a listen! And, let me know what you think.
