People are always curious as to how and why I use stainless chain mail for my creations. It started during graduate school, my professor, Dennis French, encouraged me to learn new techniques. I ended up taking a chain mail workshop from David LaPlantz at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee. We started by wrapping wire around a rod, then cutting the wire into tiny rings, and finally using the rings to create the chain mail. I found an immediate kinship to this ancient art form. And during this time, created patterns using two colors of metal rings. David stated, “Even I don’t do that.”

I continued experimenting with chain mail in various ways. Always loving the way it felt in my hands, I would notice my fellow students attempting to walk out with my precious hand-made chain mail projects. After graduating, setting up a studio on my own meant I had fewer tools available to me and less space. But this was perfect for creating chain mail. Shortly after starting my jewelry business, I discovered a source for purchasing chain mail sheets. Now I could become really creative with the chain mail.

Scale was no longer a problem – one day I found myself creating a dress. And, wondering who would wear it. But I loved how it felt on and I began to notice how movement played such an important part. An openness to creativity had pushed me into something new and challenging. The fascination of working with the material on this scale is still intriguing. But, why? Maybe you had difficulty speaking up for yourself. What if you had assistance? Wearing the clothing and jewelry provides strength, a personal inner strength, an empowerment if you will. This aspect became obvious after working with the clothing where the scale is dominant. I have certainly heard this from my customers.
